Tobias Jones left Jesus College Oxford with a double first in History and English. He worked at the London Review of Books for several years before moving to Italy, where he was lecturer in English literature at Parma University.
Tobias has written and presented television programmes for the Italian stations RAI 3, Ricchi d'Italia and Cervelli d'Italia which have received a great deal of praise both from the Italian press and the viewing public. He has also made documentaries for BBC Four and BBC Radio 3 and 4. He writes for various UK newspapers as well as the Italian political magazine Internazionale.
Tobias’ first book THE DARK HEART OF ITALY (Faber) was a massive success, being included in Waterstones’ Top 100 books for two consecutive years, the only book in the history of the list to have achieved such a feat. Tobias was also shortlisted as the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year. Tobias' second book, UTOPIAN DREAMS: A SEARCH FOR A BETTER LIFE was published by Faber in January 2007.
Tobias's first novel is THE SALATI case, published in July 2009 and following the investigations of the private detective Castagnetti. The second and third novels in this series, WHITE DEATH and DEATH OF A SHOWGIRL, were published in April 2011 and April 2013 respectively - all by Faber.
BLOOD ON THE ALTAR, published in 2012, is more than just a gripping true crime story. It's a portrait of Basilicata, the most remote and fascinating region in Italy; it's an investigation into why Italy appears to offer impunity to the powerful; it's a hunt for a serial killer; and most of all it's an appreciation of one courageous and determined family who refused to accept the injustice of Italian society.
Windsor Hill Wood is a woodland shelter set up by Tobias Jones and his wife. Inspired by the Pilsdon Community in Dorset, it aims to create a peaceful environment where people going through tough or uncertain times can come and reflect on life. Tobias wrote a weekly column about Windsor Hill Wood in the Observer for nine months. The column produced a huge mailbag and, often, up to 500 hits a day on the website (www.windsorhillwood.co.uk). A PLACE OF REFUGE, Tobias' book about this remarkable project, was published in July 2015 by Riverrun.
His book ULTRA, which consists of a compelling investigation of Italian society and its favourite sport, football, was published in September 2019 by Head of Zeus.
His new book, THE PO: An Elegy for Italy's Longest River was published by Head of Zeus on 7 July 2022.
