Philip Hoare longlisted for the Baillie Gifford 25th anniversary prize

We are please to announce that LEVIATHAN, OR THE WHALE by Philip Hoare is a contender for the Baillie Gifford 25th anniversary prize.

The prize is a Winner of Winners Award, recognising the work of the previous 24 prize winners. The one-off award will crown the best work of non-fiction from the last 25 years of the prize.

The judges include: New Statesman editor-in-chief, Jason Cowley (chair); academic, critic and broadcaster, Shahidha Bari; journalist, author and academic, Sarah Churchwell; and biographer and critic Frances Wilson.

The shortlist will be announced on 9 March, and the winner will be announced on 27 April at an event held at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

The anniversary will also be marked by a one-off documentary – All The Best Stories Are True – exploring the best non-fiction writing over the past 25 years, which will be available to watch on the Baillie Gifford Prize YouTube in February.

Waterstones will also celebrate the 25th anniversary with displays of all 24 previous winners.
